BroadBand Light (BBL) Photofacial: Benefits, How It Works, & Results

Aesthetics Daily – As you get older, your skin will age. The signs of aging will appear more quickly if you are frequently exposed to ultraviolet rays and are living unhealthy lifestyles. Skin that was previously tight and soft will turn saggy and reveal fine lines and pigmentation.

One way you can do to prevent premature aging is to always maintain healthy skin. Continuously developed medical technology enables the masking of visible signs of aging on the face. One of the technologies to treat various skin concerns is BroadBand Light (BBL) developed by Sciton.

What is BBL Photofacial?

BBL which is a light-based device takes care of many common skin problems ranging from sun damage like visible pigmentation and blood vessels, brown spots and rosacea to signs of aging. Using Sciton’s High Energy Rapid Output (HERO) technology, BBL quickly treats large areas yielding long-lasting results.

Also known as intense pulsed light (IPL) or photofacial therapy, BBL is a series of treatments to treat pigmentation and blood vessel problems. BBL is equipped with flash light technology, replaceable Smart Filters, Finesse Adapters, and CoolComfort technology.

With its wide wavelenghts, BBL allows targeted treatment for various skin conditions without the need for an additional handpiece. Plus, the flexible Finesse Adapter allows treatment of hard-to-reach areas.

How BBL Photofacial Works

BBL transmits light energy to stimulate the skin to regenerate. The light energy will gently heat beneath the skin layer. The absorbed heat will restore the skin to its natural beauty. The skin will become smoother, brighter, and younger-looking.

Not only that, the photothermal energy will get rid of the blood vessels that cause rosacea and redness. It will also reduce unwanted melanin that produces pigmented lesions.

BBL with wavelengths spanning 420 – 1400 nm targets brown spots by penetrating the skin to reach pigments. The remaining pigment particles will peel off in 7 – 14 days. In addition, BBL can also target redness by delivering light energy which will be absorbed by blood vessels in the superficial layer of the skin. This will keep the blood vessels closed and hidden from the skin surface.

Before the light energy is emitted, the patient will be applied a cooling gel to the treated area to minimize pain. Next, the applicator is placed on the area of the body to deliver light energy.

Why Choose BBL Photofacial?

Delivering 4x speed, 3x peak power and 2x cooling, BBL is one of the world’s most powerful IPL devices available on the market. BBL which has been approved by the FDA is a noninvasive phototherapy treatment that can treat all areas of the body.

BBL that needs no surgery with a little recovery period results in firmer and younger looking skin. BBL and BBL HERO have various wavelengths that are tailored to patients’ skin types and conditions.

As the latest state-of-the-art medical grade device, BBL offers an optimal combination with other Sciton systems such as Forever Young, SkinTyte and Forever Body. Unique dual light technology is able to share the workload to extend the service life of BBL handpiece. BBL with integrated thermoelectric cooling method delivers consistent energy for optimal results.

CoolComfort technology can maintain temperatures spanning 0° C – 30° C by adjusting every degree in between. Compared to other IPL devices, BBL allows for faster treatment thanks to the large spot size (15x45mm).

Preparation for Treatments

Prior to treatment, patients are advised to stay away from sun exposure. If you have tanned recently, you will be asked to wait a while before undergoing treatment. You also need to avoid medications that make you sensitive to light. If you are taking prescribed medications, you should first consult with your doctor.

During a treatment, which usually lasts about 30 – 60 minutes, the skin may appear slightly swollen and red which is a normal reaction. You will also feel mild heating and discomfort on the treated skin.

How Many BBL Treatments Needed?

Each patient gets different BBL therapy depending on skin conditions and the expected results. The doctor will provide complete information regarding the number of treatments required. Some doctors recommend 2 to 5 treatments per year for maximum results.

Results of BBL

Some skin problems such as age spots, sunspots, and damaged blood vessels will be cleared up in one to two weeks. After BBL treatment, you need to follow doctor’s instructions. Skin care products may be necessary and the use of sunscreen when going outdoors is required to prevent direct sun exposure.

Side Effects of BBL

After the treatment, your skin may feel like getting sunburnt. To reduce the pain, you can use an ice pack. Skin redness may also occur following treatment. However, these minor side effects don’t last long, within a day or two they will go away on their own.

Because BBL has little or no downtime, patients can resume their normal daily activities after treatment. Your skin may be more sensitive to sunlight, so it is important to remember the use of sunscreen when you are outdoors.
